Paris Here We Come
25-February-2008
An enthusiastic team of 24 cyclists from Waterfords Estate Agents and Chobham Rugby Club are embarking on a charity cycle ride from Chobham to The Eiffel Tower, Paris in May. The cycle ride is to raise funds in support of 2 charities, one of which is the sponsored charity of Waterfords Estate Agents and the other a sponsored charity of Chobham Rugby Club. The two charities involved, Children With Special Needs and The Royal Marsden Cancer Unit For Children have both benefited over recent times with donations from both Waterfords and Chobham Rugby Club and it is hoped that the cycle ride will raise in excess of £10,000 towards these deserving charities.
The 24 riders comprise of 6 teams and will be leaving on Wednesday 29th April from Chobham for the cycle ride down to Portsmouth. They will then be taking the overnight ferry to Le Harve and then cycling the 222 kilometres into the centre of Paris to The Eiffel Tower. The route broadly follows the course of the River Seine and will involve 3 overnight stops along the way. Sean Wickes, Operations Director of Waterfords Estate Agents, who is one of the organisers of the trip, commented “I am delighted to be involved in this project as I am not only a keen cyclist, but also these are 2 very worthy charities that I am keen to support through both my employment at Waterfords and also my involvement directly with coaching at Chobham Rugby Club”.
Having arrived in Paris the teams will be spending 1 night recovering before taking the Eurostar back to the new St Pancras Station where a champagne reception will be held to celebrate their achievement, before returning to Chobham Rugby Club to meet back up with families. Mark Fisher, one of the co-ordinators from Chobham Rugby Club said “This cycle ride is particularly poignant to us as one of our 11 year old rugby players was diagnosed with spinal cancer in February 2007 and is currently undergoing treatment at The Royal Marsden Cancer Unit For Children. Being able to raise money directly for somebody that you are closely associated with is really rewarding and The Royal Marsden put in a huge amount of work in making the lives of very poorly children as comfortable as possible.”
The Children With Special Needs Charity was established in 1995 with the sole purpose of helping children with special needs in the Surrey, Hampshire and Berkshire areas and Waterfords Estate Agents have been associated with Children With Special Needs for a number of years and raised in excess of £20,000 for their chosen charity in 2007.
